The Ujamaa Institute (TUI) helps young African Americans & multi-cultural communities become more thoughtful, skillful and strategic philanthropists, fundraisers, and activists.
Pieces to “Being the Gift.”
“Be The Gift” campaign encourages all individuals to be purposeful in their giving. Being purposeful means making a personal commitment to helping non-profits, social justice organizations, and community groups long term.

Best wishes to Sadiya EL-NuBein on her 30th birthday this summer and to her and her family as they continue their journey. Sadiya has been part of the Ujamaa family and its vision since 2007; first as an intern then a board member. Sadiya has relinquished her leadership role with The Ujamaa Institute to focus her attention on the wellness and success of her family’s relocation and her personal vision of the R.O.O.T.S. Institute http://rootsinstitute.org and the Journey H.OM.E. Project. In reflecting on her experience with Ujamaa Sadiya says that “It was such an honor to be a part of the launch of this vision and I see it continuing to empower the grassroots with innovative funding strategies. I will always remember the gift of Time, Talent, and Treasure that I learned from you.”
Thank you Sadiya for believing in our vision as we send blessings and support in honor of your vision.
Congratulation goes out to TUI board member Annette Taylor who was recently named the new Executive Director of the NC Center for Women in Public Service. Annette has played a major role in helping to develop and create organizational vision for both Ujamaa and The Ujamaa Institute. We are confident that she will bring the same level of guidance and leadership to women who serve and seek to serve throughout North Carolina.
Major kudos to TUI board member LaWana Mayfield! LaWana continues to make our Ujamaa family proud by utilizing her skills and training in a manner that emphasizes community/social philanthropy and public service. In addition to playing a major leadership role in Charlotte’s LGBT community, LaWana is now defying the status quo of being wealthy, well connected, or picked by special interest groups and is running for local office. We wish her and her family much success.
